The past few days have not been super interesting as far as what I have been up to. I have just kind of been spending time around the apartment. I've still been trying to adjust to the time difference. We did however go to the grocery store on Monday night. That was interesting. It was three quarters of a mile, just to get to the store, and three quarters of a mile back home of course. All in all a mile and a half walk, just to get groceries.
One thing that I found interesting was that the grocery store was inside a mall.... of sorts. It was different. I also found it interesting, some of the deals were amazing, and other things, I was surprised by the price. We got three pounds of bacon for about 4 american dollars, while oreos, for 12 cookies, it would have cost us almost three dollars. I am pretty happy with what we did wind up getting though, because so far everything has been delicious. We got some more yogurt for breakfasts. We got some oats/granola to go in it. We got orange juice, more porridge, and some marmalade. We also got some very Swedish bread, and some fresh vegetables. I found the mexican pies that they sell here, and got one of those. (It was a good choice) I insisted that we also get supplies to make tacos... which, lead to a discussion that informed me that they do not eat soft shelled tacos here, just burritos. I found that interesting. After that we came home, and made dinner, which was hamburgers with cucumber slices, and french fries with lemon-pepper. Then it was time to sleep.
On tuesday, I discovered what I think has been the hardest thing I have had to learn so far. Not everyone here wants to speak English with you. I was doing laundry, which I was pretty proud that I had remembered how to use the washers, and came down to get my last load from the dryer, when I was greeted by a woman. Now, there were other people around, so I didn't even know that she was talking to me at first, but she just kept saying something, and when I realized that she was talking to me, I got so confused, that I stumbled over even the English words for " I'm sorry, I don't speak much Swedish yet" It was awful. She explained what she said, and walked away. but not after giving me a look that said that she did not approve that I could not speak Swedish. I felt so terrible. I came back up to the apartment and cried. I did not want my first experience to be like that! I wanted to be able to say in Swedish something to someone! It was just plain awful feeling. Eventually my day got better, but seeing as that was the second experience of the day when someone either could not speak English back, or did not like to speak English. It was pretty sad. I can't wait until I start classes on Monday. I hope I can soon learn enough to at least get by. Its so frustrating not being able to communicate with people outside of my little bubble.
Today, I just did more laundry, cleaned up the apartment a bit, and have been excited all day for dinner! I am going to make macaroni and cheese and bacon. I am also excited, because we are going to be getting a television tonight! I joined this site called couchsurfing.com, so that when we travel, we might not have to pay for a hotel. Someone on the local group on the site, was offering to give away a television to anyone who wanted it. I talked it over with Anton and explained that I think that having a television would help me, because then I am exposed to more people speaking Swedish, and I can also learn some basic expressions, like for the weather and such. So tonight we are going to take a bus to go get the television! Other than that this week has not been all that exciting. This weekend I am going to be going to an art exhibition here in Malmö, and am going to be exploring all of downtown. So this should be a great weekend! I'm sorry if I haven't been up to all that much this week, but I just needed some time to relax. I promise I will have some more interesting things to write about soon!
